Long Snake moxibustion
Updated: Aug 31
Of all moxibustion techniques, Long Snake moxibustion is the most striking — and the rarest. Where a standard moxibustion warms one or two acupuncture points, this one covers the entire length of the spine. Hence the name: the strip of mugwort running from the upper back down to the sacrum resembles a long snake laid along the backbone.
What is Long Snake moxibustion?
Moxibustion is one of the core branches of traditional Chinese medicine, alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine. It involves warming precise areas of the body with dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi), known as moxa.
The Long Snake version — chang she jiu in Chinese, also called spread moxibustion (pu jiu) or Governing Vessel moxibustion (du jiu) — is the most extensive of all. The therapist lays a preparation of fresh ginger or garlic along the spine, spreads a strip of mugwort on top, and lights it gradually. A gentle but penetrating heat then spreads across the whole back.
Why along the spine?
In Chinese medicine the spine is traversed by the Governing Vessel (Du Mai), described as the « sea of the Yang meridians ». It governs the body's Yang energy: warmth, movement, defence and vitality. On either side of this axis lie the back Shu points, each connected to an internal organ.
Warming this axis therefore means, in the traditional reading, supporting Yang as a whole rather than acting on an isolated symptom. That is what sets Long Snake moxibustion apart from a local treatment: it is a constitutional session, not a targeted one.
How a session unfolds
You lie comfortably on your front, with your back uncovered.
The therapist locates the line of the spine, from the base of the neck to the sacrum.
A layer of fresh ginger or garlic is laid along this line: it protects the skin and reinforces the warming action.
The mugwort strip is spread on top and lit at one end. It burns slowly, from top to bottom.
The therapist stays with you throughout and adjusts the heat continuously.
The sensation should be a deep, comfortable warmth — never a burn. Afterwards the skin of the back is often reddened; this fades within a few hours.
Who is it for?
Long Snake moxibustion is traditionally offered to people showing what Chinese medicine describes as Yang deficiency: a lack of warmth and vital drive. The most common signs are:
persistent underlying fatigue and low energy;
marked sensitivity to cold, with constantly cold hands and feet;
chronic back and neck pain, stiffness on waking;
joint pain that worsens in cold, damp weather;
a tendency to catch colds repeatedly through the winter;
slow recovery after a period of exhaustion or illness.
The aim is not to remove a single symptom but to rebuild a reserve of energy the body can draw on.
The right moment: treating winter ailments in summer
Chinese medicine has an old principle: dong bing xia zhi, « treat winter illnesses in summer ». The reasoning is simple. It is during the hottest days of the year, when the Yang of nature is at its peak, that the body rebuilds its reserves most easily. Conditions that flare in the cold are therefore prepared for out of season.
This is why Long Snake moxibustion is not offered continuously. It is a seasonal practice, held only a few times a year. Do ask us when the next session is scheduled.
Precautions and contraindications
Long Snake moxibustion is a powerful technique and is not suitable for everyone. It is not advised in cases of:
pregnancy;
fever, acute infection or active inflammation;
any wound, irritation or skin lesion on the back;
reduced skin sensitivity, particularly with neuropathy — the risk of a burn would not be felt;
patterns of internal heat or Yin deficiency with heat;
uncontrolled high blood pressure;
known allergy to mugwort, garlic or ginger.
An initial consultation allows us to check that the session is appropriate for your situation. Please also note that burning mugwort produces a strong, lingering smoke. Wear clothes you can wash afterwards.
This approach complements medical care; it does not replace it.
Frequently asked questions
Is it painful?
No. The sensation is one of intense but comfortable warmth. The therapist stays beside you throughout and adjusts as soon as the heat becomes too strong.
When is it offered?
It is a seasonal practice, held only a few times a year. Dates are announced at the clinic and in our news.
Does it leave marks?
Redness across the back is normal and fades within a few hours. A residual sense of warmth may last until the next day.
