Moxibustion is a therapeutic method derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves heating acupuncture points using a dried mugwort stick called moxa to stimulate the circulation of vital energy (Qi) and strengthen the immune system.
Used for thousands of years in Asia, this technique is now attracting more and more people seeking natural and holistic treatments.
What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion is based on the principle that heat, applied to certain energy points in the body, can restore the balance between yin and yang. Moxa (made from dried mugwort, or Artemisia vulgaris) is lit and then used to heat the skin without burning it.
This gentle heat penetrates deep into the tissues and stimulates energy circulation. It is a complementary approach to acupuncture, but it can also be used alone.
Origin and Philosophy of Moxibustion
Emerged in China over 2,500 years ago, moxibustion is described in the oldest Chinese medical texts, such as the Huangdi Neijing (Classic of the Yellow Emperor).
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body is traversed by meridians through which Qi circulates. When this energy flow is blocked or weakened, illness can occur. Moxibustion therefore aims to warm the body, dispel cold, and restore the harmonious circulation of Qi.
Benefits of Moxibustion
Moxibustion is renowned for its many benefits for physical and emotional health. Here are the main effects recognized by TCM practitioners:
1. Strengthening the immune system
By stimulating points related to defensive energy (Wei Qi), moxibustion helps prevent infections and increase the body's resistance.
2. Improving energy circulation
The heat of moxa releases stagnation and relieves joint and muscle pain (back, knees, shoulders, etc.).
3. Helps turn a breech baby
Some midwives use moxibustion (particularly on point 67 (Bladder)) to encourage fetal rotation before delivery.
4. Regulating the menstrual cycle
It is often recommended to warm the uterus, relieve menstrual pain, and promote fertility.
5. Relaxation and general well-being
The diffused heat of moxa provides deep relaxation, reduces stress, and helps promote better sleep.
Different Moxa Techniques
There are several ways to apply moxa depending on the patient's energy needs:
1. Direct Moxa
Small moxa cones are placed directly on the skin (sometimes on a barrier such as ginger).
2. Indirect Moxa
A moxa stick is lit and held a few centimeters from the skin to heat the targeted area without direct contact.
3. Needle Moxa
In this technique, a small roll of moxa is attached to an acupuncture needle to amplify its effect through heat.
In conclusion:
Moxibustion, a beneficial heat for the body and mind
Moxibustion combines tradition and well-being. This gentle method, based on heat and energy, helps the body regain balance and vitality. Practiced regularly and with discernment, it is perfectly suited to a preventative and natural approach to health.
